How They Met
The Maguires met at the wedding
of Maines' sister. Gareth Maguire is Maines' brother-in-law. The couple became engaged in June 2001 while in Ireland.
The Big Day
Martie married Irishman Gareth Maguire on Aug. 10, 2001 in Kailua, Hawaii. The evening ceremony took place at a house
being rented by Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines and her husband, Adrian Pasdar. The ceremony, conducted by a local
minister, was held overlooking the water while a handful of friends including both Maines and Martie's sister and bandmate
Emily Robison looked on. The bride wore a dress by Austin designer Jyl Kutshe. The Josephine style wedding dress, designed
and created in less than a week, was made of layers of white, ivory and off- white shredded cotton gauze. It was described
as "very organic" with an empire waistline, "V" neck and deep "V" in the back. The train was made of long trails of the shredded
gauze. She wore no jewelry and was barefoot. The groom wore ivory linen pants by Dirk Bikkemmberg and a slightly sheer white
dress shirt by Costume National. He also was barefoot. "It was very simple. I did my own makeup and Natalie did my hair,"
says Martie.
THE belated wedding celebrations of stunning Dixie Chick Martie Maguire and
Carnlough boy Gareth Maguire proved to be the party to end all parties, it has been revealed.
Last night, a very tired
Emily Maguire, mother of 27-year-old Gareth, said both families had enjoyed a "fantastic day" in the Co Antrim village where
celebrations went on until 5am.
The roof was raised in the picturesque Londonderry Arms Hotel, when the country and western
group, which has notched up colossal album sales since their 1998 debut album Wide Open Spaces, took the floor.
The Dixie
Chicks are Dallas sisters Emily Robinson and Martie Maguire and friend Natalie Maines.
"They did three numbers at the end
of the night," said Mrs Maguire. "They were fantastic and really raised the roof.
"Everyone really appreciated them getting
up and performing.
"Gareths cousins, who are Irish dancers in Riverdance, also took to the floor. They were brilliant,
too.
"My voice is really hoarse because there was so much singing."
While more than 100 were invited to the meal and
knees-up, only immediate family attended the marriage blessing in St John the Evangelists Church.
"The day was very enjoyable
from start to finish," she said. "Only close family attended the blessing in the church. That included Gareths four brothers,
my husband PJ, Marties father and stepmum.
"It was a very personal service which just suited them."
Mrs Maguire, who
has known the 31-year-old fiddler with the glamorous all-female country group for several years, said her daughter-in-law
looked beautiful in a designer dress, all the way from Los Angeles.
"Martie is a very nice sort of person and I am very
happy for my son," she said. "They got married in a private ceremony in Hawaii during the summer. It was very quiet.
"They
wanted to have another ceremony so family could be involved and celebrate with them."
Mrs Maguire also revealed that her
son, a teacher by profession, performed with the Dixie Chicks last month, when they took the stage at the Winter Olympics
in Salt Lake city.
The Olympic flame was carried by the American mens ice hockey team that beat the Soviet Union in 1980,
during the Cold War. Before that, the 52,000 crowd had been entertained by Sting, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the Dixie Chicks and the
Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
"Gareth did perform with them when they opened the Winter Olympics," she said. "The piece they
were doing needed a tin-whistle player and he is that."
The proud mum said also last month Gareth and Martie bought a house
in Alsten. Martie had previously lived in Nashville.
The couple met when Gareth went to the US to attend the wedding of
his brother Shane who was getting hitched to Kim, a sister of Dixie Chick Natalie Maines.
On Thursday the Maguire clan
celebrated the christening of Kim and Shanes baby son Declan. Staff at Harrys restaurant in Cushendall got a surprise when
the celebrity family dropped in.
The couple, who were staying in Carnlough last night, plan to stay in Ireland until next
weekend.
They hope to spend a few days holidaying in the west of Ireland.
